Celebrate World Environment Day in Toowoomba
Toowoomba’s unique annual festival of the environment comes alive in Lake Annand Park next Sunday 31st May. World Environment Day’s vibrant multicultural mix of information, music, food, song and dance explodes into action from 10am til 4pm.
What: Toowoomba World Environment Day
When: Sunday 31st May, 10am to 4pm
Where: Lake Annand Park, Toowoomba
What's On?
The theme of this year's World Environment Day is Your Planet Needs You. And the range of entertainment and information offered throughout the day will have something for everyone.
The kids from Stars & Idols kick it off with ten young voices harmonising lakeside. The extravagant costumes of Raqs Araby evoking Egyptian dance moves then take to the grass. Toowoomba’s own folk duo Kelly’s Armour then deliver their brand of bullet-proof protest music.
A lively panel of speakers follows headed by Youth Climate Leadership Project Director and Six Degrees organiser Nathan Elvery. This will be followed by local farmer Nicky Bryce of Friends of Felton, who will expose the effect of the proposed coal mine on their land.
Live Middle Eastern drumming from Drumdance accompanying sensuous belly-dancers will resound across the park, while the four-piece drumming and singing of Voice of Liberia will bring the excitement of West Africa to Toowoomba.
Friends of the Earth organiser and Six Degrees campaigner Hannah Elvery will then address the crowd on her work, before conducting an environmental workshop.
An array of information and environmental stalls will operate throughout the day ranging from householders options through gardening, the Indigenous Dreaming Festival, message T-shirts and stickers, water, landcare, bird observing and the Felton Valley.
Play on Play will provide creative input to the very young throughout the festivities.
The celebrations run from 10am til 4:00pm.
The wet weather venue will be the Gabbinbar State School.
It is a free family fun day, and everyone is welcome to attend.
