Clean Coal Pilot Set to Bite the Dust?
According to the article in the Courier Mail, the Queensland government have finally accepted that their pet project is too speculative and costly. Al Gore would like to add imaginary to the list of problems with this project.
“Taxpayers should not be paying for so-called clean coal projects such as this, which can offer no guarantee of making the necessary greenhouse emissions reductions in time to avoid catastrophic changes to our climate” Six Degrees spokesperson Emma Brindal said.
“The coal industry is our biggest contributor to climate change and the Queensland government needs to stop directing any funds to this polluting industry. This includes funding for so-called clean coal projects, as well as the $700 million the Queensland government has committed to coal infrastructure for 2008-2009” said Ms Brindal.
“Instead the government should be investing the public’s money in renewable energy – technologies that exist now, are guaranteed to reduce our emissions and can provide a safe future for generations to come”.
“Carbon capture and storage projects also pose storage risks to future generations and are a further reason why the government should not be funding this technology” said Ms Brindal.
The Queensland Government had committed $125 million to the ZeroGen project which aims to capture carbon dioxide emissions and bury them underground.
