Coal Campaigners Across Queensland

Our Friends and Allies

It's hard to beat the coal industry's lobby power at any level of Government, so we know we can’t bring about a phase out of the coal industry in Queensland on our own. There are local community groups active all over the coal regions of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria standing up to protect land from coal mining, and all over the country there are climate action groups who know that coal is our biggest contributor to climate change and our biggest hurdle in transitioning to a low carbon society.

Below are some of the wonderful groups we've been working with.

Friends of the Earth (FoE)
Six Degrees lies within a broad Climate Justice campaign at Friends of the Earth. Local FoE groups are campaigning against existing coal mining, coal fired power stations and plans for expansion in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Other areas of work include climate refugees, work with trade unions, just transitions and green jobs, false solutions to climate change (such as agrofuels and so called “clean coal”), and helping to build the climate movement.

Australian Student Environment Network (ASEN)
The Australian Student Environment Network has been working both on and off campus to fight climate change for many years. Over the past two years they have been involved in increasing the use of Non-violent Direct Action against the coal industry to address the root causes of this issue. Many members of Six Degrees have been, or continue to be actively involved in ASEN.

Bimblebox Nature Refuge
Based in Alpha this group is working to protect Queensland's nature refuges from coal mining.

Friends of Felton
This group is made up of residents from the Felton Valley (near Toowoomba) who are opposing a coal mine and coal to liquids plant

Haystack Road Farmers
The Haystack Road farmers are campaigning to protect the Haystack Plains and Warra (in the Darling Downs) from coal mining.

Western Downs Alliance
The Western Downs Alliance has been formed to look at the issues and problems confronting the diverse communities that occupy the Darling Downs with relation to the coal seam gas mining industry.

Basin Sustainability Alliance
The Basin Sustainability Alliance has been formed to support individuals, landholder groups and communities concerned about the rapid development of the coal seam gas industry.

Bunya Watch
A forum for groups in the Bunya Mountains and South Burnett region to discuss local issues. Recently it has been a source of information about the Kunioon Coal Project near Kingaroy.

Mackay Conservation Group
Mackay Conservation Group are our eyes in central Queensland. They have been raising awareness of the detrimental local and global impacts of coal mining in Central Queensland for many years.

Environmental Defenders Office (EDO)
A non-profit, non-government community legal centre dedicated to providing legal advice and representation to individuals and community groups working to protect the environment. The EDO in Queensland took on the coal industry in 2006, which ended with the Queensland government stepping in to protect the coal industry over the climate. They are currently doing work on law reform and legal rights education for landholders.

Other Groups We Love

Rising Tide Newcastle
Part of the global Rising Tide climate justice movement. They live in the biggest coal port in the cosmos and are opposing its expansion.

Caroona Action Group (CCAG)
Represents a country community concerned that subsidence longwall mining will damage the underground aquifers, food and fibre production on the Liverpool Plains. They've blockaded their land from mining exploration since July 2008.

Rivers SOS Alliance
Residents and landholders of the Central Coast (among others) who oppose longwall coal mining beneath the water catchments of Dooralong and Yarramalong Valleys and its threat to the catchment's water facilities and health risks to residents.

Australia's Climate Action Summit: Climate Justice Working Group
This working group is dedicated to imbuing the burgeoning climate movement in Australia with the principles of the Climate Justice Now! Statement. Six Degrees are dedicated to these principles and strive to actively uphold them and raise awareness about them through our work.

Greenpeace Australia Pacific
Greenpeace have campaigned and done high profile direct actions against both domestic and export coal targets.

If you know of or are part of a group working on coal issues we'd love to hear from you and share information and resources.
