Community training for peaceful protest calls for climate action now!

Tomorrow (Saturday, 19/09/09) community members concerned about climate change will attend training in peaceful direct action tactics in preparation for disrupting the coal industry - Queensland's biggest contributor to climate change.

The community is realising that only through taking action ourselves will we start to break coal's strangle hold on the Queensland Government and economy."Says Six Degrees spokesperson Eleanor Smith.

Coal is Queensland's biggest contributor to climate change and yet the Government plans to double the industry's capacity over the next 20 years, throwing billions of dollars at it along the way. These actions are completely irresponsible. Serious thought needs to be put into transitioning the Queensland economy away from coal rather than burying our heads and hoping carbon capture and storage will save the day" says Ms Smith.

As part of a day long Direct Action Training, participants will be practicing kayaking skills, and role playing direct action tactics to ready themselves to take action against Queensland's coal export industry. The workshop has been organised by Six Degrees, a community campaign that is highlighting Queensland coal's contribution to climate change.
