Gillard’s climate announcement: moving backwards
A spontaneous community protest has interrupted Julia Gillard’s climate change announcement at the University of Queensland this morning.
The policies being proposed by the ALP this morning will not prevent the construction of new coal fired power stations around the country, and will not bring down Australia’s greenhouse pollution.
Several Brisbane residents from the climate change action group Six Degrees, upon reading the news in the paper this morning, decided to attend Ms. Gillard’s speech in protest against the Government’s utter climate cop-out.
Protest spokesperson, Bradley Smith, said, “We gave Labor a mandate to take climate action 3 years ago. What she announced today is just another delay tactic.
She is essentially turning back the clock to before we ratified Kyoto, to before the Garnaut review. This backwards step will come at an enormous cost, and we cannot let that happen without protest.
“40,000 coal seam gas wells in Queensland’s darling downs, 11 new coal fired power stations, and huge expansions of coal rail and ports, that’s Julia Gillard’s real climate policy, and it’s condemning our future.”
