ANZ - We die-in your world
Today, activists staged a die-in at two of ANZ's Brisbane branches, calling on the bank to stop funding dirty coal projects like Whitehaven Coal's Maules Creek Coal project.
The bank is contributing $1.2 billion towards a mine which would destroy koala habitat in Leard State Forest, and be responsible for 13 million tonnes per annum of dirty coal, making the effects of climate change even worse.
The action follows on from similar actions which have happened all around Australia in the past few weeks; Jonathan Moylan's hoax which caused media controversy, a similar die-in which happened in Melbourne, and Monday's ATM hoax where activists placed "out of order" signs on ANZ ATMs around the country.
Many others stood outside ANZ doors with banners and placards letting ANZ customers know that by funding coal, their bank is funding climate change by chanting "please bank responsibly, the climate is warming you see, so change your bank today, funding coal is not okay."
Spokesperson for the group Robbie, says "ANZ are the real criminals here. They're funding the devastation of koala habitat, the Great Barrier Reef and contributing to catastrophic climate change. 20 billion dollars worth of support to the coal industry is 20 billion dollars worth of disaster."
Group spokesperson Robert Burns, says 'ANZ are the real criminals here. They're funding the devastation of koala habitat, the great barrier reef and contributing to catastrophic climate change. 20 billion dollars worth of support to the coal industry is 20 billion dollars worth of disaster.'
"Actions like this will continue to happen until ANZ disinvest from coal mines and other destructive projects" said Mr Burns.
