Six Degrees and Climate Justice
Six Degrees and Climate Justice
Six Degrees' work is grounded in an understanding of the need for climate justice, and by taking climate change personally; its members work to redress the inequalities that underpin climate change.
As the Queensland Government bows to the pressure of corporate lobbying and continues to expand the coal industry, and hence its impact on the climate; it is the already marginalised in society who will pay the greatest price. With climate change already displacing and otherwise affecting millions of people in the world, including Australia, the Queensland Government must transition away from its coal addiction. In taking individual and collective action towards phasing out Queensland's coal industry by 2020, members of Six Degrees are taking responsibility for Australia’s unfair impact on the earth's climate and its peoples.
In every action taken, Six Degrees works in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples of Australia and the world, and as we facilitate change for an environmentally and socially just future, we recognise that this transition must be led by communities, particularly those most affected by both climate change and its solutions. Six Degrees' understanding of and work towards Indigenous Solidarity and Just Transitions are examples of this justice-based approach to climate change.
