Volunteer and Internship Opportunities
Six Degrees seeks interns and volunteers in a variety of areas throughout the year. As an all-volunteer organisation, it is a great place for students and community members to get hands-on experience in grassroots organising, non-profit management, and community building. There are many ways to get involved, and we are happy to work with course coordinators and students to craft internships that can meet both course needs and six degrees resources and opportunities. Applications are rolling, and those who are interested may contact the email address listed for each opportunity.

Web Development
Six Degrees is looking for an IT or software engineering volunteer/intern (any level) with knowledge (or extensive curiosity) in web development to work with the six degrees web team on improving and maintaining the six degrees website.
Some responsibilities will include:
- Developing an interactive map of coal developments in queensland
- Social media integration with our website
- Working through a list of desired incremental improvements to the website
- Developing our contact relationship management database (civiCRM)
Many of these responsibilities present simple to intermediate implementation problems with which the intern can refine or learn implementation skills in the following web development areas:
- Drupal
- HTML/CSS
- PHP
- MySQL
- JavaScript
Some basic knowledge of these development tools is a plus, but using this role as an excuse to learn some of the above is perfectly fine! We just ask that you are highly motivated to learn. Excellent communication skills are a must and work hours can be set depending on your needs.

Media
Six Degrees is looking for a media intern to work with the campaign’s media team on media monitoring and the writing of media releases and letters to the editor.
Some responsibilities will include:
- Developing a cataloging system for tracking relevant articles and journalists that write on coal and climate change
- Daily media monitoring of online and print newspapers / media sources
- Writing letters to the editor in response to relevant stories
- Monitoring Queensland Government media releases
- Working with the media spokespeople to write proactive and reactive media releases
This work is suited to a journalism student or anyone with good communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic knowledge of climate change is expected and experience working on a campaign or as part of a collective is a plus but not necessary for the role. The time commitment is flexible depending on intern/volunteer needs.

Social Media and Online Communications
Six Degrees is looking for an intern to work with the campaign’s media team on writing content for social media, the campaign website and feature articles.
Some responsibilities will include:
- Contribution to six degrees online presence through daily social media monitoring and response
- Research for relevant and current feature articles and web content
- Working with six degrees members to author relevant and engaging feature articles and web stories, for example on the impacts of coal on water and health, and international coal markets and impacts.
This work is suited to journalism and communication students or anyone with good writing and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic knowledge of climate change is expected and experience working on a campaign or as part of a collective is a plus but not necessary for the role. The time commitment is flexible depending on intern/volunteer needs.

Events Organiser
Six Degrees is looking for an intern or volunteer to work with the campaign on planning and running a wide variety of events with our constituents and allies.
Some responsibilities will include:
- Working with Six Degrees and Coal Affected Communities Resource Developments members and volunteers to plan a wide variety of events, such as public forums, benefit concerts/parties, community meetings and demonstrations.
- Liaising with our constituents and allies to promote and organise events.
- Evaluating events and following up with attendees.
This work is suited to anyone with good time-management and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic knowledge of climate change and experience working on a campaign or as part of a collective is a plus but not necessary for the role. The time commitment is flexible depending on intern/volunteer needs.

Coal-affected Communities Resource Development
Six Degrees is looking for a law, environmental management or community development student (any level) to develop a set of resources to support communities in Queensland that are being affected by the expansion of the coal industry. They are intended to provide information on the process of coal mine development, communicate legal rights of landholders and the community in regards to this process and provide suggestions or a framework for resistance.
Some responsibilities will include:
- Researching the operation of relevant minerals legislation
- Researching the governmental process of mining and infrastructure developments
- Researching Legal rights of landholders in regards to mining companies
- Development of fact sheets that communicate the research findings to a wide audience
- Liaising with Six Degrees allies throughout the development of the resources (ie. the Environmental Defenders Office)
This work requires somebody with good communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic knowledge of climate change is expected and experience working on a campaign or as part of a collective is a plus but not necessary for the role. It is expected that it will take 20-30 hours to complete the resource pack.

Campaign Resource Development
Six Degrees is looking for a marketing or design student and an environmental management or environmental science student to develop a set of resources that enable people to take action on coal. The pack is intended to provide a factual overview on coal in Queensland and specific steps that people can do to take action on coal.
Some responsibilities will include:
- Updating existing research on health impacts of coal, coal seam gas, water and coal
- Overview research of Queensland coal (existing mines, coal export figures, carbon emissions generated etc.)
- Turn the research into fact sheets that clearly distill the information in an engaging way
- Work with six degrees members to develop a number of different activities that people can do to become active on coal
- Layout the pack in a visually appealing way
This work requires somebody with good communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic knowledge of climate change is expected and experience working on a campaign or as part of a collective is a plus but not necessary for the role.
