Who really benefits from coal mining in Queensland?

Who really benefits from coal mining in QueenslandThis poster was prepared put together by John Graham and members of the Mackay Conservation Group.

Among the facts that it reminds us of:

  • The Queensland Government GIVES $1.7 billion to coal mining per year, but only $1.4 billion is RECEIVED FROM Queensland coal mines per year
  • Whilst the coal industry provided 19,462 in 2007-08, the agricultural industry provides 4 times more employment for Queenslanders, and the tourism industry as many as 6 times the amount of jobs
  • The expansion of the coal industry drives inflation, which means higher interest rates, which means a less competitive economy for all Australians
  • Why should coal mining be more important than food production, community health, or our unique and fragile environment?
